Nebulasaurus (NEB-yoo-luh-SAWR-us; “Nebula lizard” or “Cloudy lizard”) is a genus of turiasaurian sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Early to Middle Jurassic period, approximately 174 to 168 million years ago. Its fossils were discovered in the Zhanghe Formation in Yunnan Province, China. The name Nebulasaurus refers to Yunlong County, which means “Cloudy Dragon County,” where the remains were found, and also hints at the somewhat “cloudy” or unclear understanding of its exact evolutionary relationships when first discovered. This dinosaur is currently known from a single, well-preserved braincase (the part of the skull that houses the brain), which was first described by paleontologists Lida Xing and colleagues in 2013.

Description and Classification

Nebulasaurus was a large, four-legged plant-eating dinosaur, a body plan typical for sauropods. As a member of the group Turiasauria, it belongs to an early and distinct branch of sauropod evolution. Turiasaurs, such as its European relative Turiasaurus, could grow to enormous sizes, although the full size of Nebulasaurus is unknown due to the limited fossil material.
