Gasosaurus
Gasosaurus (GAS-oh-SAWR-us; “Gas lizard”) is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived during the Middle Jurassic period, about 164 to 161 million years ago, in what is now China. The name Gasosaurus refers to the fact that its fossils were discovered by workers from a gasoline (petroleum) company during exploration in the Dashanpu Quarry in Sichuan Province. This meat-eating dinosaur was first named and described by paleontologists Dong Zhiming and Tang Zilu in 1985.
Description and Classification
Gasosaurus was a medium-sized carnivorous dinosaur. Scientists estimate it grew to be about 3.5 to 4 meters (11.5 to 13 feet) long and may have weighed around 150 kilograms (330 pounds), although some estimates suggest it could have been larger. Like other theropods, Gasosaurus walked on two strong hind legs and had shorter arms. It would have had a fairly long tail to help with balance and a head equipped with sharp teeth for tearing meat, though skull material is not well-preserved.
